Think it would be better to be more specific. Like if she's taking chips or something off the shelf, passing by and saying "Are those good?"

That's at least asking her opinion on something specific, not treating her like she works at the store.

I would go with the second answer, it gets her opinion and then opens up the way to a whole other conversation where you can ask her what she would recomend. At that point you can state that you were getting them for a picknic or some other event and move into an invite.

A female friend of mine loves flirting with strangers at the grocery store, she'll walk by a guy and say, "Oh those are really good." or some other opinion about the products that he appears to be looking at. If he responds positively, she'll move it into a conversation. If he gives her a puzzled look, she'll keep walking.

For an opinion opener, you can try "What do you think of these?" or "Have you tried these?" as either she or you hold up an item. It would be good to plan out a couple of transitions. Some ideas of transition: Summer picnics, great places to lie in the sun, summer festivals in your city and upcoming plans with friends for the weekend.

    Example:
She's looking at the Organic Lentil Chips.
PUA: "What do you think of those?"
Her: They're really you good. You should try them.
PUA: I've been looking for a good snack to take to (summer festival). Have you heard about (band that's going to be playing)?
Her: No, I just moved here for Minnesota.
PUA: I should show you around town. What your number?

^ I like this post right here. I feel like "whats good in this aisle" would be too plain and would possibly weird them out.

Torrent_K, thanks for the props. Feel free to click the "like button" on my post (next to the share options).

Personally I don't worry about the openers as much as the transitions anymore, but I'm mostly running game at bars, clubs and dance studios. I love talking about my experiences traveling overseas, so I'm sure that there's a number of good ways to move into that topic. Maybe casually commenting about the national origin of the fruits? Or noticing some usual produce like Bok Choy.

I just thought of a clever one for my South American travels: "Excuse me. Do you know where the pisco is?" If she doesn't know what pisco is, you can explain that it's an amazing Chilean hard alcohol made from grape skins. If she does know about it, that opens up a whole great conversation. I've never been to Chile, but I've definitely had some good pisco in South America. Sadly you can't find it in many stores here.

For someone with travel exp in Asia, you could ask, "Where is the bok choy? I'm trying to make some kimchi, but I just can't find it anywhere." Almost everybody I've met who's experienced kimchi has strong opinion of it. Generally white people think it smells gross, and Asian people think it tastes great. Either way, it's another good conversation piece.
