Default How to tell good stories?

I suck at telling stories on the spot, especially when women are around. It's like a mental block prevents me from remembering. Of course 30 second later it will come back to me, but by then it would be too awkward to interject a story about something we were talking about 30 seconds ago. Is there some formula to telling stories successfully? I feel some people have this perfect story recall, and i just don't. How have they mastered this?

This is something I'm working on myself.

The first thing I really did was sit down and figure out WHAT kind of stories I can use with DHVs. I REALLY REALLY had trouble figuring out what to actually go from initially. Once I actually sat down and thought about some events in my life I was able to come up with at least a few to start with.

Through my job I haven't been quite as social as I'd like to have been the past few years, but it's given me PLENTY of good stories (I'm sure you can guess my profession).

So the few that I'm fleshing out right now are:

    1. About how my luggage got lost in Newark on my way back from Vegas. (travel, family, humor)
    2. Hurricane Katrina relief effort. (adventure/travel, compassion)
    3. How one of my guys almost cut his finger off on a water fountain. (leadership, respect, humor)

Granted I'm still working on them, but once I actually figured a few out I think it was easier. I've got plenty of "war stories" that guys find more interesting then women. Women don't generally like the gory details of what I do for a living, but they're great for guy stories too.

Think about things in your life that you are genuinely passionate about, the best stories are true as they are easy to tell and remember and its easier to make people believe them, funny stories about younger siblings, travel and MMA (my sport) are the ones I use most often. Be expressive, use gestures etc and stories become far more interesting. But most of alll practice practice practice. Run them on everyone you meet not just HBs

I wouldnt craft or fib, or tell stories that you werent involved in, like some dudes try to mimic a story but really it was their brother or friend that told the story and they try to re-tell it as it being themselves in it. Theyll see right through this shit(if they are intelligent).

its 2012 alot of interesting stuff is happening, and I just speak of every day stuff. Comedy, lessons learned(via intelligence), extremities(showing your emotional).

You dont have to embellish the truth. Ive told many common stories of just everyday activities, and just the way I express myself explaining them properly can do it.

Show that your taking an active part in reality and you can handle life.

Autismus, the articles you provided on DHVing by implementing specifically attuned stories were very helpful. The only issue is that girls are bored by my hobbies. I'm a computer engineer, so I like to do a lot of esoteric stuff on the computer, which women couldn't give two sh1ts about. I also love physics, debating politics, and scientific journalism, but lets be real: being a nerd, or a computer science goob is a huge turnoff for most women. I mean I like to party, but so does everyone else pretty much. Gym is also pretty standard. To top things off, I've never had money for travel, and realistically my humor rivals Bob Saget. I feel like I have to lie in my stories because I don't have any good content for telling a dhv story. I guess i just don't have a relatively fun life that I can tell stories about =(. What everyday activities do you tell stories about?

    Definitely this!

You have to make sure your stories are congruent!

I was playing poker with a guy maybe a month ago. He was talking about how he was in Vegas playing as a high roller. He said something along the lines of making 100k playing craps. HOWEVER he sat down at the poker table with 100 bucks (where the buyin is $100-300).

This screams bullshit, he story doesn't match reality. If you have that kind of money, then you wouldn't be buying in for the smallest amount in the room. Be a storyteller, not a "bullshitter".

it doesnt matter if its real or not just let her know its a fake story without telling her. What matters is if its interesting.

Use alot of visual words and hand movement and tones
and most of all its how you say the story that determines how interesting it can get.
