    Default The pirate opener

I've been playing some Direct Game recently, so this was a little bit of a change for me. It was quite refreshing to be delivering an indirect line again, and with this one it sets up a really nice atmosphere for conversation.

I devised this opener yesterday and started trying it out immediately. It works especially nice in Bristol as Bristol is a harbor city and is full of boats and bars along the waterfront. It goes as follows.

So, approach a set (works best with a set as it can start some lively debate and banter.) You start the question as though you're going to ask something sincere and serious..

me - "Sorry guys, I was just wondering if you could help us quickly."

    them - "what's up?"

me - "well me and my friend were just sat there along the waterfront having a quioet drink as you do, and we were looking out over the waterfront, we started looking at the boats there..."

    them - "ok"

me - "We were thinking how awesome it would be to have a boat like that and cruise up and down the waterfront having our own little party, you know?"

them - "yeah that would be amazing."

me - "Awesome, well... this is where we need your help..."

(up until now everything has been delivered like we're actually going to ask them for something serious, but now the tone changes slightly so that they see it's a joke. by now they're usually a little intrigued.)

me - "So, we decided we're going to become pirates and steal one of these boats, but we need to build a crew first, cos it takes a lot of people to drive those things..."

And there it is. Simple really. Some of the responses we got were

them - "Do you know how to steal a boat?"

me - "Well no, Getting a crew was the first thing on our list, then I was kind of hoping you guys would know how to do it, or we could brainstorm ideas..."

Another girl just got ridiculously excited about the idea and I wonder if she may have thought we were serious. it seemed to spark lots of lively conversation, which is always helpful. And it was easy to turn the conversation into a more general one, then start being quite direct.

By the way, we were using this opener on the streets as opposed to bars and clubs, I don't know if that makes any difference for y'all.

    What do you think?

    Really it's a great opener

My only hesitation is that it requires so much back story ahead of time, usually you need to capture their interest pretty quickly, but I'm not sure how to improve it without ruining your set up

Also fix your intro, don't apologize ("sorry guys but..."), which presumes you're interrupting and a bother, so remove that

Also don't ask permission to talk to them, assume it

"hey girls, real quick I need your help with something"

That's a much stronger way to start. Minor change but it makes a big difference

Usually I would stick to the rules of time constraints, rooting, not apologising or any of that stuff, which make it a much more social and friendly opener... But on this one those thing almost work to it's advantage. When I delivered it it was so deadpan that they always thought I was being serious at first, which is one of the nice things about it. Works with what James Marshall says about pressure and release.

Basically if you stick to all those rules it's very conversational and pretty clear that from the beginning you're not being serious. I think this reduces the dynamics of their response. If they think they're being seriously asked to commit piracy at first, the initial surprise and shock disperses when you start to crack the dry tone and they seem to have this "oh my god.." excited/relief moment. It sort of breaks their composure.

If you try it at all, please would you try with the non apologies and those rules, and then try it my way.. Just to see the difference it makes? Would be interested to hear feed back.

    And thanks for your response.

Sounds like a fun opener. I'll personally probably never use it for 2 reasons 1) logistical reasons (I'm not usually by any large bodies of water 2) too much backstory for me. I always approach directly, so im use to not thinking. It does sound like a fun opener though. Cheers for the creativity!

Yeah I don't really use indirect anymore, Just go very direct. The reason me and my friend found ourselves going indirect like this was that we were on a pub crawl and I had got really high earlier in the day which destroyed my confidence in approaches. We made a couple but my head wasn't in the right space. So Just to stay in the flow of approaching and leaving the day on a good note i devised this and we had some fun with it.

Next time though, back to direct for me.

    BY the way guys, the back story can easily be shortened like this;

me - "So me and my friend were just looking out at the boats on the river there, and we thought "how awesome would it be to have one?" So, we decided we're gonna hijack one. But we need a crew!"

I seem to have quite an engaging way of speaking so for me a longer back story isn't so much of a problem, as well as I can talk quite fast while maintaining a natural sound to what I'm saying. I like the longer back story as it builds atmosphere and almost a crescendo to the joke. But maybe it could work with the shorter.

ya that's a fun backstory. but you can't depend on one fun story to always get laid. you should be making more fun stories and adventures like that.

While that's true, that's not the point of this post. I'm sure that he has plenty of other openers but this was a new one that was at most minimally tested so he wanted to get our opinions.

With the shortened backstory, this is pretty solid in my opinion, especially if you're right on the water/by a lot of boats.

Stig, I think this is almost right. I'm. going to suggest you put the " chick bait" our front.

which one of you knows how to hijack a boat?

    lol, none of us.

come on, which one of you would be the best boat theif

    why?

we were looking at the boats and thinking how nice it would be to have one, then we decided to hijack one, and if you're going to hijack a boat then you might as well become pirates, that question was a test to see if you're pirate crew material.
