I took the subway from one of my girls' places to go back home this morning. I noticed a tall blonde HB8 on the platform. I kept a good distance and acted as if she wasn't there. I just kept smiling as I waited for the subway. She ended up walking behind me through the door that I walked in. ioi #1.
Still paying no attention, she "bumped" into me, apologized, and stood right next to me IOI #2-3. I just smiled. She briefly took her headphones out; I knew it was because she was opening herself to conversation. IOI #4. But there was a group of businessmen talking loudly next to us and the announcements went on, so she quickly put her headphones back in. I wasn't going to fight for her attention and just stayed to myself. I noticed that she had a rubberband around the wrist of her hand that was holding onto one of the handrails.
After the next stop, the loud businessmen got off. When her eyes met mine, I smiled, pointed to her wrist, and said loudly (because she still had headphones in):
Me: "Nice bracelet."
Her: [quickly qualifying herself] "I just moved here. I haven't had a chance to unpack all my stuff."
Me (smiling): "A likely excuse." [still trying to make it like I'm judging her and that I'm the prize to win.] "Where'd you move to?"
Me (smiling): "Cool, I used to live there. What area?"
Her: [She said a street name. She obviously didn't know the area. I just waited for her to say something else. Let her do the work.] "East Williamsburg I guess?"
Me: "Cool! I used to live in Williamsburg!" [Establishing a connection]. "Great area!" [showing approval, like she's meeting my standards.] "Where are you from?"
Her: "North Carolina. You?"
Me: "Born and raised NYC" (smiling proudly). "Where exactly in North Carolina are you from?" [I don't know much N.C. geography, but I knew that I wanted to tell her a story about it. I also wanted her to think about home to have positive emotions and thus, associate those emotions with me]
Her: [I forget what she said. Who cares.]
Me (smiling, nostalgic, looking deep in her eyes): "I loovee North Carolina! I used to go every summer with my family. Emerald Isle! Do you know of it?"
Her: "No, I don't."
Me: [realizing that she could be getting off at any stop] "So where are you heading to?" [train starts slowing up to a stop]
Her: "Here, actually. Trying a yoga spot."
Me: "Sounds fun. Way to hit the ground running here! Come join my friends and I out on the town this weekend. We'll show you the ropes around here." [I then gave her my phone.]
Her: "That would be amazing! I can't wait! [She puts in her number. Done.]
