Default Need to learn to dance

Ok so I am 27, I know how to dance but I don't think I dance well enough or know enough variety of dances.

I'd like an opinion of what kind of dance lessons or clubs I should join to be well rounded on the dance floor of a club. Thanks!

Well it depends on what you like, what your goals are, and what type of clubs/parties you frequent.

Consider looking for clubs or dance studios that offer dance classes early in the evening before opening to the public for dancing. Usually these will be specialty venues or specific nights that focus on one style of music or dance such as Salsa or Swing.

You can also look for classes at a community college, but expect to do a little bit of work besides dancing itself. It is worth it though, since classes are less expensive and will usually run over the course of many weeks, plus the written work will be minimal and beneficial to your learning. You will learn much more of the fundamentals of dancing that will carry over to various styles and you will develop a refined level of dancing, so long as you put the effort in. I recommend beginning here since you will usually find dedicated, full-time instructors who truly focus on teaching the basics. Many schools have performances run by the instructors and the dance departments which allow their students to participate. This will be very beneficial to your learning and confidence if you decide to participate.

If you like the top 40 clubs, you will benefit from learning hip hop dancing. If you are into Latin styles, learn Salsa. It is very popular and there are many clubs and studios that specialize in it. It is a bit challenging, but that is why I recommend it even more since you will learn transferable skills and if you reach even a moderate level of skill, you will look great on the dance floor. You also have the option of Bachata and in some places Cumbia. There are also many places that offer Swing and ballroom dancing such as Tango, Waltz, and others.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Honestly you can go on YouTube and practice in the mirror. Ultimately it comes down to you going on the dancefloor and not worrying about people watching you. And you don't have to be the best dancer. I definitely am not. The coolest thing I do when dancing is ticking and a bit of salsa and that's enough to get approached. Along with smiling and being fun that is. Don't take yourself too seriously when dancing.
