There is a technique called nouning and it's done wonders for my conversational abilities. I came across it in a book I read to about 15 years ago. With just a bit of practice in any situation you'll see within a month or so that your conversation with ALL OTHERS are so much better.

It's been written about here in other threads. Here is a really good thread that I have bookmarked that I review every couple of months when I think I am getting into a bad habit. It works but like anything else in life you have to work at it for it to do that.

we keep going back to dull subjects
here's a question you should ask yourself, "are they dull subjects, or a boring person failing to make ordinary subjects more interesting?"

the truth is that any topic can be interesting if you make it interesting.

the way to do this is by being more descriptive and have more enthusiasm for what you're talking about.

    examples:

    what not to do:

her: do you like to cook?

    me: yeah sometimes, do you?

    her: of course.

not much of a conversation eh? its because you're holding back details.

    good example:

her: do you like to cook?

me: I love to! though I have to admit it can be challenging...

    her: how so?

me: well this one time, I decided to take a nap while I had my moms birthday cake in the oven, needless to say, she got to blow out the candles with a fire extinguisher.

her: oh my god! that's hilarious blah blah

    see the difference?
here, I made sure to give more than just some typical boring answer and used it as an opportunity to tell a personal story.

you see there's a nice trick being played here.

the more you open up to a girl, the more inclined she is to open up to you.

this doesn't mean you have to tell her your deepest darkest secrets, but it does mean you have to talk about yourself to get her talking about herself.

btw, that story about the birthday cake was completely bullshit, but people rarely notice the difference between bullshit and the truth as long as you don't throw in ninja's and attack helicopters.
