Why is a "line" needed?

I am always amazed that guys try to use witty pick up lines to get a lady's attention. Why do they do this?

Because it gives you something to say, and is sometimes witty or funny. I personally don't use lines anymore... I just go up and tell a woman that she seems interesting and I wanted to come over and say hi.

"Lines" are mostly used by the guys who didn't like to speak more openly. They always go for the alternative way instead of moving straight forward.

It never worked on me. I think it's to open up and say something. To get the girls to start talking. Gives them confidence.

Guys use lines because it gives them the confidence needed to approach in the first place...think about it would you talk to or even pay attention to a guy thats just gawking at you lol prob not, reason being it would make the IA or interaction strange and weird even, so to take the place of that lines are sumtimes actually i would say always needed to assist a guy with approach

Lines are lines even if you dont consider them lines...did u get it lol. Guys dont have to always use cheesy ass lines like EG: Baby you were running through my mind all day care to take a rest on my couch lol to interact with you a line could be hey I was wondering do you kno where starbucks is located? something so simple could be a very powerful weapon when used correctly.

So as you see lines are just an icebreaking tool, remember not all guys are born natural casanovas into the world some must use what they have to step one step forward towards success.

In that respects.. all initial conversations are line or openers. My favorite is: "Hey, I've been walking around here for the last 2 hours and you are by far the cutest/hottest/sexiest girl I have seen. What's your story - where are you headed?"

Anything like that works well for me.

It has to be situational though...
