I bet 'hey I just moved here I'm just out meeting new people' will be a fine excuse should anyone ask why you're out alone so screw it. Women may ask 'who are you here with' you can say 'Actually I JUST moved to town and got settled so I'm out meeting people'. You can talk to anyone about what's happening locally, where to go and so on so just do it!

If you're not yet that confident in picking up alone, go with a buddy who is good in doing the pick up. Ask for some advice and tips. If you feel somewhat confident already, you can now go pick up alone.

One other advantage of being someplace new, I think, is that nobody there knows you and so you start fresh. Start by chatting up strangers, engaging in small talk while in line at the grocer, complimenting girls, anything to make you more confident of interacting with people.
