The trick to story telling

I've been using my speech and debate teacher as a resource in helping me improve my story telling. There are a few things I have learned from him.

The most important thing that I have learned about good story telling is to match the story with the person you are telling it to. In other words you need to tell a story that the person you are telling it to will connect with. This is important because the reason to tell a story is to get a person attracted to you, and when a person feels like they are connected to that is the first step of them being attracted to you, so when you tell a story that they can connect to on a deep level, then you are telling a great story.

For example consider a (fake) conversation I had with a girl who recently had an appendicitis.

Opener, Fluff.
****
She mentions the surgery.
****
And now I see my story opportunity.

So check this out, I was playing soccer and I was the goalie, it was the last game of the season and I just got put in. I saved 7 shots but then they got a breakaway. I moved out to cut off the guy's angle and he shot as I did, I dived and saved it. But then he cleated me in the head and landed on my stomach. So my dad took me to the hospital and they said my there was internal bleeding in my head. I had surgery and then went home 3 days later, when i got home I had really bad stomach pain and so I went back to the hospital....

Anyway the story gets deeper into my injury and I almost die twice. I have used this story (which is true) in the past and it is one of the greatest dhv's I have ever used, the reason it's so good? Because it is something that every single person in the world can connect to, we've all been hurt, but not only does it have that connection, it takes it to the next level. Instead of being like everyone else, I am like them, but better, because I had this happen to me, at least, that's what the ladies think.

Anyway, discuss the idea of story telling and what makes a good story and what makes a bad story.
