Default This ain't New York City....

Hey, everybody, I'm a 40 year old guy just getting back into it, and I got two fashion questions:

    1. What magazines, etc. are good for current fashion ideas for NORMAL people? I look in GQ regularly but that stuff is too over the top for around here. I mean, you're not going to wear a $900 suit to target or BW3. Unless you're going to Off the Hookah on a Saturday night, you're going to be overdressed. This is Richmond, for crying out loud.

    2. I try to be stylish, but the last thing I want to do is be that 40 year old guy that's trying to look like a college student. I don't look 40, probably more like 35, but I can't exactly pull off 21 anymore. Do yall think 40 is too old for Aeropostale?

    Hey Guitarman,
I'm kinda in the same boat. I'm almost 42 & kind of "in between" styles.... meaning I don't really have "a look".

Whenever I go out, I generally wear a nice pair of jeans, decent shoes & a casual shirt of some sort. But I've just begun thinking about my wardrobe lately, & trying to think of how to match a look with my personality.

I'm leaning towards getting a few "Fitted" dress shirts (to avoid having that "tent" look that regular shirts create because, I'm fairly lean, and those things balloon out too much! LOL)
Also on the list is a couple pars of casual dress pants & a couple pairs of dress shoes.

I've actually talked to a couple girls about shoes & they said that personally, they have a pet peeve about guys who wear sneakers with jeans. That didn't matter seeing as I don't own sneakers, but it WAS a bit of an eye opener, as far as what women look at when they're checking out guys.

Gentlemen. Im not in my 40s yet but I am in my 30s.

My word of advice is wear something nice. I look at it this way. When I go out I tend to go out to a college party area. All the ladies are in their early to mid twenties on an average.

When I look around I see the same damn thing. Dudes wearing shorts, tshirts, sneakers, sandals, baseball caps and so on. I on the othe hand wear fitted jeans (NOT SKINNY JEANS) dress shoes, well fitted dress shirts and either a kangol hat or a fedora. I wear a very nice watch to compliment my clothing, and a bracelet. I have tattoos so ai roll my sleeves to just below my elbow. A lot of the times the girls are the ones who open me (the fedoras do this a lot).

What Im getting at is who gives a fuck how old you are. I will admit at first I feel odd because of the age difference but I quickly realized its weird if you make it weird. Further, dressing to impress will set you over the top. Think Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck. Old dude still pulling girls of different ages. It's all attitude, how you carry yourself and dont blend in with the rest of the chodes at the venue.

The ladies take their time to dress up and sell themselves when they go out per say, so they will defenity appreciate just seeing A MAN who does the same and will at times approach you because of this.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    On the original question.

Aeropostale in my opinion is just walk around clothes and I personally would just rock a sweater from them during the daytime when Im out and about. That's just me. At night when I go out I'll wear what I previously mentioned.

Brands that will make you look like you're in your midlife crisis:

    -Aeropostale
    -American Eagle
    -Abercrombie & Fitch
    -The Buckle
    -Ecko

Brands that will work well for you:

    -Gap
    -Dockers
    -Arrow
    -Old Navy
    -Calvin Klein
-Express (Be careful with this though)
-Apt. 9 (Be careful with this one too)
    -Kenneth Cole
    -Perry Ellis

These are just off the top of my head and specifically clothing. If you want different forms of apparel just ask.
Wondering where I am now? Check out my latest project:

You have to dress for the girls you want to attract, if you want to attract professional, lawyers type, then use a suit. If you want to attract HB10's the dress like a rock star. In any case you should dress in a style that feels natural to you. I personally dress like a cowboy-rock star style. And I attract all kind kind of hot girls, from bar tenders, high scale hostess and doctors among a few!

    P.S.
Clothes are important but will not get you laid if you have zero game!

    Totally agree with the above.

Its all about your personality. Just dress to impress but with class. Some days I dress up some
Days i dress somewhat down. I just refuse to wear the same thig everyome wears when they go out. But like it has been previously mentioned. If you aint got the balls and the game. What you wear wont matter for shit.

Right now Im wearing a tshirt that says frijolero(beaner) i know how to play it off since imhave a solid transition to it because it really dont boil down to ignorant steriotypes. Whatever the point is game dudes. Just go out there comfortable in ur own skin and you will be straight.

Go to Amazon.com. Searchs mens style. Choose a book based upon the reviews. Study it.

    Guitarman,

GQ is a great resource imo, but I agree not everything they offer is always practical. Really look around their offerings and you can find some great articles.

If you like GQ I suggest:
    1. askmen (good general resource, great selection of resources, download the "Style Bible" from their as a foundation)
    2. primermagazine (newer site, targeted for young professional but broad fit, practical resource)

I would suggest shopping through larger brands like:
    -Lacoste
    -Ralph Lauren
    -Calvin Klein
    -Kenneth Cole
    -Gap/Banana Republic
    -Sonoma/Haggar

None will break your bank if you're wise with your spending (which above sites can assist with). Just figure out your comfort zone for style. Hope this helps.
