I wouldn't rely completely on store clerks. it's their job to sell as much as possible. Plus, this type of job is low wage so they're not trained to give you the best advice possible. One of my girlfriends took one of those jobs selling jeans at Mustang a few years, she had no idea about style and she quit 3 weekes later because it wasn't what she wanted.

And why buy a fuzzy boa just because you like how it looks? It will look completely different once you put it on. Plus, to make a real decision about what you like and don't like you need to experiment a lot. Every fashion item, every accessory.

If you buy a boa just because you like it and 2 years later you discover that chinos + dress shirts make you look more like a real man, whouldn't you feel stupid for wasting all this time dressed like a girl? Experiment first, buy later.
The difference between style and fashion is quality.

    +1

this helped me to fix my wardrobe recently, thrown out some old stuff I hardly ever wore, added some new trendy stuff and now its much better of course it's good to just look at similar sites for the current trends and adjust your wardrobe slightly, leaving its core neutral so it fits any trends any occasions

I am in the process of changing my wardrobe and getting rid of old clothes and buying newer nicer ones.

One thing that inspired me was seeing myself in some pics wearing older shirts. I just thought to myself "wow, I look kind of dorky in that shirt." So now I'm trying not to buy stuff if I think a women won't think looks good. It doesn't have to be super stylish it just has to be something that looks good and doesn't make me look like Homer Simpson's twin(if he had one).

I've read all of the replies and generally agree. Jeans should be a staple in your wardrobe, and definately not skinny jeans. Khakis are fine also. I never wear sneakers and I always receive compliments on my phone chukka boots. I have black and brown. Both have blue shoe laces. If you are on the larger size I am not sure about tucking in your shirts. I usually wear a dress shirt, either a regular one suitable to be worn with a suit or a fancier one that is meant for jeans, and rarely tuck them in unless I have a sport coat on. I also think a smart look is a quality t-shirt and a sport coat or tuxedo jacket with jeans. Once again I might not tuck in the shirt. I think you will stand out in a crowd if you do these simple things and, honestly, I always get compliments.

I personally will go out after work, Which I am normally in a button down with dress pants. As far as brand, I like the look of Guess. When I am hitting a club or bar I normally wear a button down or polo with jeans and depending on the length, I will do a partial tuck just above the belt buckle ( I didnt think it would work for me.) However, Tonight I K-closed a 20 year old and I'm 30. I try to vary my look slightly and test it out. I always ask my fav. female bartender how I look when I arrive and she will tell me what to change if I look like a tool.

Just like it was said earlier, find what works for you.. do not try to look 20 but try not to look like everyone else you will be competing with.

You can see many men choosing ties that are very bright and flashy but they fail to realize that such a tie can't create a positive impression as a business professional. You need to choose a tie that matches with your pant but contrasting with your shirt.

I individually shop at fsession.com/ Where there are plenty of inexpensive and cost-effective components like outfits and others. Other than that, I don't aim for allegiance to any product. Look for and get what YOU think looks good on YOU.

Nothing wrong with flashy. Businessmen, even politicians wear pink ties with black, gray or navy suits.

As others suggest if you have any female friends ask them for advice.

    Some other pointers:
    - wear nice shoes, women check that sort of stuff out. I like italian leather boots. If you wear cowboy boots, wear them under your jeans, not over the top. Boots can add height too.
    - Buy clothes that are tactile, feel nice, something a girl could imagine hugging into you.
    - Jewelry can be cool, a surfer necklace made from shells, a skull ring, a leather wrist band. You can use them for stories too 'This is my talisman', 'this is my love charm', 'this ring says love goes by destiny'
    - In winter buy a long black felt like coat and wear a scarf neatly wrapped up. Most girls I know love that casual gentleman look.
    - Dont be afraid to look young. Better chance at getting younger girls. Just dont try to be a hip hop dude or anything.

A timeless fool proof setup is wearing good jeans, leather stylish boots in black, brown or bone colour (not workboots or hush puppy grandpa shoes - something with a little bit of a long point on it like italian or spanish shoes or even cowboy boots - inside jeans), a tucked in white shirt with top two buttons undone and a black velvet jacket, no tie.

If you have ever visited italy you will see lots of good looking people wearing very simple but elegant fashion. Good shoes, neat jeans, simple but nice top. Good sunglasses.
