Default Need some basic fashion advice

I really want to wear nicer and more stylish clothes. I just want maybe two or three nice pants(jeans if possible), four or five nice shirts etc. I would like names of specific shirts(and kinds of shirts)including a few t shirts maybe. I am in my early forties so please keep that in mind. I don't want to wind up looking like I'm trying to be a teenager or something. Again please give me brand names to look out for.

Also, should a shirt be tucked in or out when going out? Any other basic advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

I personally shop at Rue 21, but I don't think that will do you any good with what you are aiming for. Other than that, I don't aim for allegiance to any brand. Shop for and get what YOU think looks good on YOU. Nothing looks better than a man who is super confident in his looks.

I want to look nice and classy but not necessarily super fashionable. I just want to tweak my look a bit. I am tall, bald and a little bit chunky(although I am in the process of trying to lose weight). I know that clothes are suppose to fit well and not be too loose.

Anyway, thanks for the link. I've seen expensive fashion systems but I think that might be overkill.

Ahh, I see. I actually don't buy anything from the site. As I said, it's all inspiration. If you see a combination that you have and like, try it out. If you don't have it, see if you can get it for cheap somewhere else.

hey i hear you man - i was once pretty clueless so what i did was look at the latest men's fashion magazines - GQ being the best one, but also because their articles are for the smart classy man.
So check out magazines - but keep in mind you don't have to buy the exact same items the models are wearing - its just to give you ideas, and you definitely don't have to spend alot of money.
Go to macy's they always have sales - hit the clearance rack at gap or jcrew- a personal favorite of mine is h&m - there clothes is affordable n nice.
Remember to wear your clothes fitted to look sharp - no bagginess!

Thanks. I posted another thread, that no one has responded to yet, asking for specific recommendations for short sleeve shirts(or long sleeve for that matter) for someone my size(I usually take XL).

Try jackthreads. U have to sign up but they have nothing but good solid clothes on clearance. Stay away from skinny jeans stick to khakis or cargos (if u want to look a little more sophisticated). Try layering also.

Shirts will need to be tucked if they have long tails. Some shirts made to be either or. Flat bottom shirts are not meant to be tucked. Do navy grey black colors more in winter. Do colorful stuff in summer. I personally never wear just a tshirt (im large lol). Try to wear an open collar shirt over it. Unless or at the beach lol.

I also had some advice on my personal newbie guide thread.

I got this called "Details:Men's Style Manual"
To sum up the book and save you money here are the important notes I took from it.

    1. Focus on style not fashion. Style is infinite. Fashion comes and goes

    2. Fit is the most important detail. Let me repeat this point. Fit is the most important. It most complement your body type. I could go into the details from the book but the would be long winded. Put shortly, you must try many different styles to find what suits you. This is a great opportunity to outside your comfort zone. Go tons of different stores and try it all out. Ask the store clerks for advice or to even chose an outfit that looks good for you.
    3. As far as other accesories choose things that fall under style. Classic pieces that suit your personality. The key here is to be subtle.
    4. The book goes into details about colors but all you need to know is find the colors that best compliment your skin color. Again try many different brands.
    5. Jeans are my personal favorite because of their versaltility. Stick with dark indigo colors and again remember fit is most important. Jeans hang lower than your waist so they might be a different size than other pants. Also check your butt out in the mirror and make sure there is no too saggy or alot of looseness there. Make sure that they reach over midfoot and do not touch the floor when worn at the low waist.
    6. Shoes are also to be kept classic. Stick with neutral colors here for more versaltility. Gray, white, black, brown. Also an important note is to go shopping for shoes when your feet are swollen, like after a long work day, so you can find the right size.
    7. You mentioned what to wear when you go out. This depends on the venue. Upscale you would wear a button down with good pants, depending if its really fancy then tuck in the shirt. If it is upscale but a little more relaxed then wear the button down and jeans, shirt out. Club or bar gain depends on the level of formality so adjust accordingly. You want to stand out but not too much. But this is just my personal style. Some guys can pull off crazy looks because it suits their personality, if you don't feel comfortable when you wear it then its not for you.
I tried to make this concise as possible. I'm sure I left a lot out but as a guy who wanted to learn more about men's style I found the amount of conflicting information overwhelming. So hopefully this helps cut through the bullshit. If you take anything away from this just remember 2 points don't follow trends they don't last long and the fit of the clothes.

    Hey Mystik,

Let me give you my 2 cents in additoin to what has already been said here.

    1. All brands have larger shirt sizes. Just browse all the stores in your mall, decide on the ones that have the right size and a good price, make your purchase(s) then take them to your tailor for adjustment.

    2. To not look like a teenager I would not exaggerate with colors, patterns and accessories. 3 colors at the most a maximum of 2 patterns and pick the right accessories for your age. Casual rings are out, bracelets are a maybe (depends on your taste) and think about ties, pocket squares, scarves, watches, cufflinks, tie bars, hats and, of course, sunglasses.

    3. If you don't want to verdo it, try wearing monochromatic clothes but try to insert patterns. For instance, how about a gray pair of heans, a black&white houhdstooth shirt, black brogues and a black belt? YOu can adda drop of color - a purple tie if you want.

    4. Always tuck in your shirt, walking with your shirt untucked is best suited for younger men.
The difference between style and fashion is quality.

I can't remember what guru said this but these words have stuck in my mind. "If you ever saw something that you wanted to buy no matter if it was a fuzzy boa but then thought no that's not my style. Buy it. If you looked at it and wanted it then it IS your style." No one can help you with your style over the computer. We would have to see you in different outfits and tell you what looks best. We can not do that so go ask the store clerk. Tell her that you are trying to revamp your wardrobe and want to know what she thinks would look good on you. After all when your trying to attract a women the best persons advise to get is the women.
Any of you guys in the Dayton Oh area let me know and we will sarge.
