I think it takes a while, and practicing game helps deal with it. Try approaching a few groups a week. I found that focusing on reaching my goal of approaching people distracted me a bit from aa.

Go to Levi's, Pepe Jeans, whatever. Ask a girl (who works there) something about a jacket, for example. Chat with her about what you'd like in a jacket and try to know if they have it. Repeat. Repeat.
Next, go to a library for example, or in the supermarket. Ask some girl for help with something related to cooking. "Hey, I'm kinda new in the art of cooking. What goes along with sauce, pasta, whatever?". Repeat, change the topic. Next thing is to use your imagination about the topic.

Don't go directly to chat with a girl at night. Way harder.

You can do it mate. They won't say "why the fuck are you talking to me? My god, I'm gonna call the police, you look like Charles Manson!!!"

As the great philosopher Lil Wayne once said: "repetition, repetition, repetition."

    No, but seriously.
I think (at least in terms of my own self) that the best way to kill Approach Anxiety is to face that shhhh headfirst.
The only real way to conquer any fear starts with CONFRONTING it.
Meditate on a favourite trait of yours and visual a way to use it as your first "attack".

And as the others have said: game, game, game!
