Default Your username on a dating site

I've been having a quick perusal around the threads here. I haven't seen anything about it yet, so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the importance of your username on a dating site?

Also, regarding profiles. I saw Neil Strauss' myspace page:

"I'm a selfish prick. A hot, rich, pampered intellectual with a big dick and a marathon tongue. I'm young enough to do it often and young enough to do it right. I don't have the time for petty drama or emotional hysterics. I do what I want, when I want."

Is that the kind of angle you're looking for when it comes to online profiles?

Here's a bit of helpful info for ya!

Usernames DO matter to some extent.

If you use something like "Mr.Bigd1ck69" girls will totally ignore you.
Honestly I had great success using my initials & zip code. Simple but effective. (It also helped girls narrow down my location which was beneficial, logistically speaking.)

Neil's myspace page is also a completely different thing than an online dating site.
Using a description like that will also get you ignored by women...
So, unless you're thinking of signing up for an adult / swinger site I would recommend not taking that approach.

Legitimate girls are looking for "Confident Men with Class". You want to express social grace & charm.
(A girl doesn't want to worry about being embarrassed in public, by some guy who is clueless about how to act.)

    That's great, thanks for that!

That makes sense, and initials/a relevant number was something I was going to go with in the event no one replied to this.

I guess broadly it's about clearly demonstrating who you are, what you want - and that you know it, without being a dick about it.

    Exactly!

A simple, easy to remember, non-douchey username is definitely the best way to go.

And you want to create mystery & intrigue with your profile; rather than telling your life story, or coming across as cocky or arrogant.

Humor is like gold... and a touch of sarcasm works to.
You want to attract the type of women you're interested in, while weeding out the ones you're not... so making a profile with the right vibe can help do that.

So it's about engaging on more than one level. The profile has to bring out some curiosity, make the reader smile/laugh and maybe present yourself as someone that can challenge them (in a good way).

I've always struggled with humour that isn't a response to something I've seen/heard. Looking at the examples around on this site, I would never think to write stuff like that (which I guess is exactly the point of them - normal guys don't think of stuff like that).

I guess it's crucial not to start with 'Not sure what to say'. I should know who I am and what I want.

Maybe the best thing is to just put down everything I can think of for the various questions (using POF as the template), ranging from the crazier answers to the AFC ones. Just putting every thought down then try to make it all work together.

    Here's a little tip-

One thing I did was, browse through the men's profiles anonymously for a while, so I could see what they wrote... (Which by the way was a HUGE eye-opener, as far as learning what NOT to do!)

The whole "not sure what to say here" thing that you just mentioned, is a good example.

You'll also see a TON of guys with comments like "I'm just a laid back guy"

    or

"I like to hang out with my friends"

    or

"I like golf" (or fishing/hunting) etc...

    or

"I'm shy at first but when you get to know me I warm up"

    All of those are No-No's!!

Another couple things to avoid saying are: "Thanks for reading my profile" & "Message me if you're interested"

The thing is, I'd say about 90-95% of the guys have those phrases in their profiles. And that's part of the reason why so many of them have zero luck with POF & other dating sites.

So, definitely keep that in mind when you're drafting yours.

    You're welcome my friend!!
    That's what we're here for.

Besides, whenever I help someone else it also helps ME learn & improve as well. So I'm all good with it!

BTW... I Do have a section about "Online Dating" in my "Texting Do's & Don'ts" thread. It covers a bit about setting up a profile (including pictures) and has a few examples of email openers I've used & had great success with.

Ah nice one, the guide is brilliant, very helpful indeed!
Definitely going to start looking around profiles to get a gauge on what not to write (maybe I'll see a couple worth adapting for myself?)
