Default Emoticons: Yay or Nay :-?

Just wanted to open up the floor for some general discussion and see what your collective thoughts were.

I for one am an avid user but I'm trying to cut back. I think they work really well for creating context and letting you get away with cheeky comments/jokes, but they're also a little beta IMO.

    Your thoughts?

Sure but never more than she uses. Make her work for them! I only use them when they say something I really really find cute or different

They're great if what you have to say will come across as too sharp without them. Don't use them too often.

i disagree, say "you're a retard" as opposed to "you're a retard :P" well enjoy damage control, although having said that you don't have to be like and 24-7 only use it where required

one thing i like to do is just look for how many emoticons ive used just to see if it's getting out of hand, and then go by that (y)

Agreed. Nothing beta about an emoticon. To me that's like saying its beta to deliver a neg or a tease with a smile on your face. Emoticons provide much needed context.

I've heard from some to NEVER use emoticons. I totally disagree. If I'm negging or teasing, I'll usually put a tongue face if it seems like it'll be insulting if you were being serious. I rarely do smileys anymore. I don't do any other faces really. No kissy faces

Since we're on the subject of texting, I recommend to anyone who does this to lose lol or lmao at the end of their texts. It's a very insecure thing and shows nervousness. I used to do it all the time. If I ever do lol, it's at the beginning of the text and a response to something funny that was said.

Not using emoticons is like going through life saying everything with a straight face. You need them to make sure you get your point across right. Why take a chance she's going to get offended by a joke if a simple could have saved your ass?

You've all heard of mirroring, right? Copying someone's body language so they feel a connection with you. You can and should do the same thing with texting. If a girl says lol a lot, toss a few into your texts. If she uses emoticons, use emoticons. If she spells everything out than guess what, you should too.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “WOW...What a Ride!”

That is what emoticons are for. So things are not taken out of context because we can't mind read through text. There's various schools of thought on this from PUA masters.

I know Kezia Noble advises to steer away from using them as much as possible. Her take is it's something that girls do. You're not a girl.

It will be interesting though to hear other women's opinion on whether guys using emotes is a turn-off.

In fact I might use this as an indirect opener lol.

thanks for the advice, i didn't realise that with the chick i'm gaming currently, she uses it a fare amount

@bandit - mirroring actually applies over text too? - i never would've thought this would be the case, thx (y)

That's similar to adding a "haha" at the end. IMO, it asserts the humor. I think you mean if you put those at the ends of texts that don't need them; for example:

"What's up? Lol" (I swear, I've seen this as a first text several times)

If that's the case, definitely lose it.

As for the original question, emoticons are cool but you have to use them at the right times . If you overuse them, you come off a little......creepy!

I think I've made my point here
Always leave her better than you found her.
