Default Opening a long time FB friend you've never talked to before

I'll keep it straight and simple...how would you open a girl who you're friends and know with but haven't talked to before?

There's a girl at the University next to mine who I use to go to middle school with (she's a year younger) and she'll probably remember my name but maybe not details from school. I can't remember talking to her during that time so this could very well be the first "verbal" interaction we have.

What would your message look like in a situation like this? My thought was a direct open would be best, just not sure what it would be.
Thanks for the advice and guidance.

Keep it simple and light. Start with an introduction, how you might know her and something to bridge your commonalities like a memory you both might share
Every moment counts, get out of your head and enjoy it.

What artandale says. But instead of "oh, we were so young, wild and free and whatever", try to remember some situation where you can tease her.

Thanks! I think light and simple (maybe less direct) is the way to go. I'm not sure we have any memories though. We were in different grades, different parts of the building actually, so we didn't interact or have any classes together. The more I think about this the more it seems like a cold approach.

What about commenting on her major? She's studying brain cognitive science which I find pretty fascinating. Is there a line about that I could use?
