Great advice from cocotuiri, I just want to build on it a little bit.
I've been into fitness for almost 10 years now. I read a bunch of literature on the subject when I was in prison. What cocotuiri said about your nutrition is spot on. Eat less calories than you take in. Period. I would also suggest you eat hella vegetables (radical idea, I know) the fiber in veggies help to clean out your guts. If you haven't been eating right, you probably have a bunch of poop just stuck to your intestines (yuck!) so eat fiber-rich foods. Like nuts, vegetables, fruits, sweet potatoes, oats, etc. YES those foods are high in carbs (except the nuts) but those carbs are LOW on the glycemic index (they're NOT going to make you fat). Try eating less red meat, switch to fish or chicken, they have less saturated fat (high in calories).
Also, as far as exercise..
I'm not with the whole "Do a bunch of cardio" thing. I've researched the subject extensively and found that, while yes, cardio exercises burn fat, they also eat up your MUSCLE. And you don't want that. Not just because being muscular looks good, but muscles also burn fat <<<Long explanation, has to do with your metabolism, just trust me bro.
I would suggest doing calisthenics. Pushups, pullups, burpees, body-weight squats, sprints, bear crawls, lunges, broad jumps etc. You don't need any equipment for these exercises (ok, maybe a pull-up bar).
Do these exercises in a 'circuit'
EX: one set of pushups, one set of pullups, one set of squats, one set of lunges - with NO REST in between sets. You rest after the circuit, then you go again.
This is going to raise your heart rate (just like cardio) but you're also going to build muscle (which will literally burn calories while you sleep, as your body repairs the muscle that you just worked)
