    Thanks Duke!

Just took on a second job today, so should be able to afford a Gym membership soon
I like your posts you got some good goals and a decent amount of dedication.

I started working out in Jan doing pushups and crunches. Didn't really put on any weight kept losing it.

So I joined the Gym last week doing full body workouts every day for 3 days strait. Took Whey and increased my protein intake. Started at 158 in Jan now I am @ 165lbs 6'3. Don't really notice it yet. Worked out this week 3 days strait full body. I'll do 1 more day on Friday and weigh myself again on Fri. By the way I am really skinny still at 165 cuz I am very tall. I'll give an update soon.

You actually are able to build 1 pound of muscle a week. And if you're truly a scrawny dude you want to gain fat... I don't see the issue here.

I don't really want to get into this, but...you cannot build 1 pound of muscle a week. Maybe in one week, like your very first week. But even that is unlikely. Now if you're taking steroids you could possibly do it. Think about it, 1 lbs a week would be 52 lbs per year.

You can't gain 1 pound a week for a year no... but you can gain 1 pound a week for an extended time. Its much more complex than that. You can only gain about 23 pounds of muscle in a year due to protein turnover in you muscles... which would average to .5 pounds a week. But in reality you could gain that 23 pounds in 6 months and none for the next six months. Regardless my point is short term you can pack on a pound a week. You are correct though you can't sustain that level of gain consistently.

Okay Crokstad, OP, and others I just got back from the Gym and wanted to give an update.

Started in FEB @ 160lbs when I joined the gym. Only gained about 2 pounds doing pushups for the entire month of Jan. Just weighed myself @ 166 and only my 3rd week @ the Gym.

I have already started to put on size in my arms and shoulders that I can see and have been getting compliments from others already the difference is starting to show. I recommend you stop putting off the Gym Crokstad. If you want I can tell you the work out program I got going because it is definitely causing me to grow.

Not only that but I have never weighed over 161 lbs ever until I started this intense work out program. Plus it was often very hard to stay over the 158lb mark. If I hadn't started working out I would probably be around 158lbs.

So definitely happy about the progress I am making here. I will get back to you guys with another update when I start making more progress. So sore just going to take the weekend off.

Wink Re: Building a body as a skinny guy

Step 1 - Stop reading muscle magazines. 99.9% of you (yes, including me) are genetically average and as such, you should read/listen to qualified people who actually know how to produce results in our body types.

Step 2 - Stop thinking that push-ups and sit-ups matter with respect to muscle gain. They do not. They can create moderate Tension, and accelerate the loss of some macros which could yield some fat loss, but realistically, they will not trigger muscle growth in any meaningful way. In fact, no high-volume low-weight exercises like this will do anything except rapidly deplete glycogen. Overt direct sustained high weight causes maximal growth.

Step 3- The only real supplements you need are possibly a multi, greens+, some fish oil and maybe some fairly cheap mixed protein powder (either casein, whey/casein blend, or something that can deliver sustained aminos throughout the non-peak usages. Dymatize is a good brand and inexpensive. Creatine, ECA stacks, and Clen (grey) can help, but NONE of these are really necessary unless you are looking to compete. You can hit a 12-15% bodyfat range, and sculpt a nice body, on water, greens, whole protein sources, natural fats and some low-glycemic fruits/carbs.

Step 4 - Eliminate sugars, fructose (in juice form), and HFCS. Eat 1gm/lb protein (from whole food sources, and powders when you don't have time). Then use complex, low gi carbs and "clean fats" to shift your calories to above, at or below needs based on weight loss/gain goals.

Step 5 - Hydrate, Sleep, Push HEAVY weights (either on a depletion/saturation cycle, or 6-9 sets per major body part per week), eat, repeat.

** DEADLIFTING YOUR 250 pound girlfriend 100 times over 30 days will produce more muscle growth than 2,500 pushups will do in the same period of time.

Step 6 - Get some calipers and measure your bodyfat levels and if you are a guy, shoot for around 11-15% (no lower, no higher), and that seems to be the range that women respond to with respect to definition. For size, just maintain that range and increase muscle mass if that's what you want.

If anyone wants what I consider to be one of the holy grails in "how to do anything nutritionally related" google Lyle McDonald and read the UD2 diet. It is one of the most solid foundational diet plans on the planet for bodybuildres as well as non-bodybuilders. For anyone who really studies this stuff, you should know this guy.

    Great post and advice Virgil.

Here are a few tips I would add for SKINNY guys specifically (as an athletic fitness coach who had to grow from 8 stone to 13 stone)

    - Don't train to failure - focus on getting stronger all over
    - Stick with compound movements until you can do at least 10 chin ups, and squat your own bodyweight
    - Keep sessions short, with minimal exercises (4-5 at most per session)
    - Train multiple times per week
    - Don't neglect conditioning. It won't make you shrivel away like magazines claim. It'll help blood flow and send nutrients to grow the muscles. Just don't go over board. 1-2 sessions of 15-20 minute HIIT should do the trick.
    - Don't get caught up in counting calories. Just eat, and enjoy it =)

Yeah just wanted to give an update on where I am at. 6'3 and 173LBS and I started up at the Gym in late Feb and it is early April. I still look small LOL but I gained 15lbs so far. My shirts are getting a lot tighter too.

I don't know maybe @ 190lbs I will look better? But yeah 15lbs in 1.5 months is pretty awesome. Can't wait to see how I turn out this Summer. Started @ 158lbs in Jan. Being this was my new years resolution I am very happy with it.

Now I won't be sh!t tested as much about going to the Gym and not only that it is a good conversation topic.

Are there any training regiments for upper body that are free of charge. Like I use running to keep my lower body in shape, and I guess I could do more push-ups than I normally do, but are there other ways?

I have only seen skinny guys get huge by doing roids. My buddy does roids actually, was a super skinny black kid. Now he looks amazing, and he keeps it under control. He sees a doc too for checkups, but idk how he managed that since its illegal.

I dont recommend it, especially since I already have thin hair and I would likely go bald. But hey man, it works for others.
